Title: Energy and Building Performance Assessment and Classification of Commercial Buildings in Singapore

This project develops from previous work where a benchmarking database has been developed for commercial buildings in Singapore. It aims to develop detailed building systemsˇ¦ performance benchmark with respect to energy consumption. Such a series of benchmarking database would facilitate prediction of energy saving potential of existing building. It also provides a reference for the design and budgeting of energy efficient building. In addition, the benchmarking system can lead to a useful classification system in term of energy performance, which in turn supports a building energy labelling system.

16 commercial buildings, with energy performance standard stretches from the best to the worst building according to the existing benchmark developed, have been selected for the study. In each case, detailed building and system design, usage and management data have been captured and verified on site. Energy consumption loggings were then conducted and the indoor environmental performance of the building measured. Statistical analyses and tests were conducted to verify parameters and performance relationships before a benchmarking curve is developed. Benchmarking curves have been developed for the main services systems including air-conditioning, lighting, lifts and escalators, and ventilation systems.

Benefits of the Research Works for Commercial and Industrial Use

  • Serve as a reference to building design professionals to adopt a more holistic approach in designing an energy efficient building
  • It provides peer benchmarking.
  • The classification and performance benchmarking has the potential to improve the habitability and energy sustainability of new or retrofitted buildings.
  • Promote Singapore as a regional hub for Energy Efficiency Research and Development.
